Final raindrop falls
The world suspended in time
'Fore it hits the ground
Absolute silence
Raindrop twinkles in the light
Like a falling star
Following its path:
Aspiring to meet the earth
Then to fall once more
Haikus (HI – koo) are an ancient form of Japanese poetry. A haiku consists of three lines: the first is five syllables long, the second is seven syllables long, and the third line is again five syllables long. Haikus usually talk about a single thing in a single moment of time. The poem above is a series of three haikus detailing the moment before a raindrop touches the ground.
