Sky arcs overhead
Blanketing the Earth
Always protecting
A quiet pond, rippling
Sunlight plays across the waves
A symbol of peace
Stones slow the waves
Which journey ever for shore
A burst of color
Haikus (HI – koo) are an ancient form of Japanese poetry. A haiku consists of three lines: the first is five syllables long, the second is seven syllables long, and the third line is again five syllables long. Haikus usually talk about a single thing in a single moment of time. The poem above is a series of three haikus detailing a scene in nature.
